Asmara meets every arrival with the thin, cool air of its 2,300 m plateau and the drifting scent of coffee from a kiosk inside the modest terminal. Immigration queues advance at a deliberate pace beneath murals of colonial-era aircraft. Officers in sage-green uniforms stamp passports with a decisive thud you feel through the counter. Every visitor needs a visa secured before landing, there is no visa-on-arrival desk, so your first glimpse of Asmara's art-deco control tower should never come as a shock. Keep printed copies of your permit, hotel address, and onward ticket handy. Phone screens often refuse to load on the airport's sluggish Wi-Fi. Beyond baggage reclaim, a single customs channel funnels travelers past a waist-high table where dogs check for fresh fruit. The polished terrazzo floor mirrors the mid-morning sun, and cool mountain air slips through open doors, easing the press of bodies. Taxis line up beyond the exit. Their blue-and-white paint gleams as drivers call out destinations in Tigrinya, Italian, and English. Swap a small amount of cash at the lone booth inside, the rate is fixed nationwide, so you leave with nakfa notes smelling of fresh ink for the 15-minute ride into downtown Asmara.

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Eritrea requires every foreign passport holder to obtain a visa in advance; Asmara International Airport issues none on arrival.

How to Apply: Submit passport, two photos, completed form, itinerary, and invitation or hotel voucher to the Eritrean embassy or consulate accredited to your country.

Extensions possible at the Immigration Office on Harnet Avenue, Asmara, before the original visa expires.

Arrival Process

Expect a calm but thorough inspection at Asmara International Airport. Officers examine every page of your passport and occasionally ask to see the cash you intend to change.

1
Immigration Primary Inspection
Hand over passport, visa, and arrival card. Officer scans your fingerprints and takes a webcam photo beneath a faded mural of Fiat biplanes.
2
Baggage Reclaim
One belt serves both international flights. Bags appear slowly while a loudspeaker crackles names of passengers whose boxes need manual inspection.
3
Customs Secondary Inspection
Place luggage on the metal table. An agent may slice open a wrapped souvenir to sniff for coffee beans or incense. Declare electronics if you plan to take them out again.
4
Currency Declaration
If carrying cash above the threshold, fill a small pink form and hand it to the customs officer who staples one copy inside your passport.

Documents to Have Ready

Printed visa
Eritrean visa sticker already affixed to passport.
Hotel voucher or invitation letter
Must show an address in Asmara where you will stay the first night.
Yellow-fever certificate
Required if arriving from a yellow-fever country. Officers check the date.
Return or onward ticket
Paper copy speeds up questions about exit plans.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Carry a black-ink pen; the arrival card table often has none.
Keep small denomination USD or EUR notes separate. The exchange booth gives nakfa in large bills that taxi drivers struggle to change.
Photograph your luggage before check-in; bags frequently arrive dust-covered and officers like visual proof of contents.

Customs & Duty-Free

Eritrea enforces strict limits on duty-free items. Officers physically count bottles and cigarettes at the lone customs desk in Asmara's terminal.

Alcohol
1 bottle (up to 1 litre) of wine or spirits
Must be 18 years or older. Beer is counted separately and limited to 2 litres.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 g loose tobacco
Loose packets are opened for a sniff test.
Currency
Declaration required if carrying more than USD 10,000 or equivalent
Form must be presented on exit to prove no illegal exchange.
Gifts/Goods
Items up to a combined value of 200 nakfa (≈ mid-range local shopping)
New electronics may be registered in your passport to avoid export tax on departure.

Prohibited Items

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables, risk of crop disease on the plateau.
  • Satellite phones, require special permit from the Ministry of Transport.
  • Publications criticizing the government, may be confiscated and fines levied.

Restricted Items

  • Medication containing codeine, carry doctor's letter and pack in original blister packs for inspection.

Health Requirements

Yellow-fever vaccination is the only mandatory shot for passengers arriving from endemic zones. Otherwise Asmara's high altitude keeps most tropical diseases at bay.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow fever (if arriving from affected country)

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Typhoid
  • Routine boosters (MMR, diphtheria-tetanus)
  • Rabies for extended rural travel

Health Insurance

No compulsory insurance. But hospitals in Asmara expect cash payment before treatment. Carry a policy document showing emergency evacuation cover.

Current Health Requirements: There are no longer COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for entry into Asmara. Yet airlines may impose their own rules, check before boarding.
