Health Insurance
Comprehensive travel health insurance with emergency medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Medical facilities in Eritrea are limited, and serious medical conditions may require evacuation to another country. Ensure your policy covers Eritrea and includes evacuation coverage of at least USD 100,000. Keep insurance documents and emergency contact numbers readily accessible.
Protect Your Trip with Travel Insurance
Comprehensive coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and 24/7 emergency assistance. Many countries recommend or require travel insurance.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children must have their own passport and visa. Minors traveling without both parents should carry notarized parental consent letters from absent parent(s), including permission to travel, contact information, and copies of parents' passports. Single parents should carry the child's birth certificate. Divorced or separated parents should carry custody documents. Adoption papers should be carried for adopted children. Eritrean authorities are strict about child welfare and may question solo parent travelers.
Individuals of Eritrean descent or dual nationals must enter Eritrea on an Eritrean passport. Those who left Eritrea without completing national service or paying the diaspora tax (2% income tax) may face difficulties, including exit bans, arrest, or forced conscription. Males aged 18-50 and females aged 18-40 may be subject to national service requirements. Consult with the Eritrean embassy about your specific situation before travel. Exit permits may be required for Eritrean nationals or dual citizens.
Importing pets to Eritrea is extremely difficult and not recommended for short visits. Requirements include: valid rabies vaccination certificate (at least 30 days before travel but not more than 12 months), health certificate issued by licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel, import permit from Eritrean Ministry of Agriculture (must be arranged well in advance), and quarantine may be required upon arrival. Contact the Eritrean embassy for current requirements and to begin the permit process at least 3 months before travel. Facilities for pets are very limited in Eritrea.
Tourist visas are typically issued for 30 days. Extensions are difficult to obtain and must be applied for at the Immigration Office in Asmara before your visa expires. Requirements include: valid reason for extension, letter from sponsor, proof of accommodation, proof of sufficient funds, and payment of extension fees. Business visas and work permits require separate applications and sponsorship from an Eritrean company or organization. Processing can take weeks with no guarantee of approval. Overstaying your visa can result in fines, detention, and difficulty departing. Plan your visit carefully within your visa validity period.
Journalists, photographers, and media professionals face strict requirements and scrutiny. A special journalist visa must be obtained through the Ministry of Information, requiring detailed information about your assignment, publications, and itinerary. This process can take months. Independent journalism is heavily restricted. All filming and photography require permits. Working on a tourist visa is illegal and can result in detention and deportation. Even tourists should avoid photographing government buildings, military installations, infrastructure, or taking photos that could be considered sensitive.
Business visas require a letter of invitation from an Eritrean company or government entity, detailed business itinerary, and company registration documents. Processing takes several weeks. Business visitors must register with immigration upon arrival and may require additional permits for certain activities. Multiple entry business visas are available but require strong justification. Business travelers should work closely with their Eritrean sponsor to ensure all requirements are met.
Travel permits are required for movement outside Asmara to other cities or regions. Apply at the Tourism Service Office in Asmara or through your hotel/tour operator. Requirements include: passport copy, visa copy, detailed itinerary, and reason for travel. Processing typically takes 1-3 days but can be longer. Some areas may be off-limits or require additional permissions. Checkpoints are common on roads outside Asmara where permits will be verified. Traveling without proper permits can result in detention, fines, and deportation.
